CAPPIES
The Cappies, "Critics and Awards Program," is a program through which high school theater and journalism students are trained as critics, attend shows at other schools, write reviews, and publish those reviews in local newspapers like The Washington Post, Cincinnati Enquirer, Dallas Morning News, Kansas City Star, and Orange County Register. At the end of the year, the student critics vote for awards, that are presented at a formal Cappies Gala. In July and August, many of the top award honorees from around the U.S. are invited to participate in the Cappies National Theater, where they perform shows at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Cappies originally started in 1999 in the Washington DC area. The Orange County Cappies (OCC) started during the 2003-2004 school year. OCC is the first Cappies program in the state of California…and west of the Rockies. The Tesoro Critics Team is one of the original 11 schools in the OCC. The other charter schools are: Brethren Christian, El Toro, Huntington Beach APA, Newport Harbor, Northwood, Pacifica, Santa Ana, St. Margaret’s, Mission Viejo, & Tri-School.
